Shakespeare Squared is a full-service development company that writes, edits, and designs materials for large educational publishers. Here, interns will get real-world experience working in several different areas of educational publishing.
Our Company
Specializing in PreK-12 educational materials, our company customizes teams of staff editors, interns, and freelancers to develop products for educational publishing companies. Since establishment in 2003, Shakespeare Squared has grown into a highly-respected name in publishing and development, working regularly with industry leaders HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Pearson Scott Foresman, and many others. We strive daily to develop quality products because we know the difference we can make by creating materials that aid in the education and growth of children. Our dedication to quality has warranted recent press attention including a spotlight feature on MSNBC’s “Your Business” and an Inc. Magazine article “The Way I Work: Kim Kleeman” featuring our president.
Our Employees
Shakespeare Squared’s team is built on a foundation of 30 staff members and more than 500 freelance educators, editors, and writers. The company culture focuses on a friendly and welcoming environment, offering monthly potluck lunches, a stress management room set aside for relaxation, and get-togethers outside of work, including softball games, karaoke nights, and happy hours. It is a fast-paced growing company, so staff members must be efficient, independent workers, but our focus still remains on creating a friendly environment. Our commitment to our employees was publicly reflected this year when we were awarded sixth place in the 2008 “30 Best Places to Work, Illinois” by the Business Ledger and Society for Human Resource Management.
Our Internships
By working with one of Inc. Magazine’s 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies, our interns are placed directly into the fast-moving world of publishing. Being an intern at Shakespeare Squared is not about fetching coffee, but instead about becoming a valuable member of our tight-knit community. Past interns have been heavily relied upon to be contributing members of our team, given work usually reserved for our full-time staff or freelance workers. After all, we recognize that interns have good ideas and great work ethic.
At Shakespeare Squared, we hope interns get the most out of their time with us. Status meetings and progress journals help ensure our interns are being given projects they enjoy and find beneficial, as well as help the interns keep track of everything they’ve accomplished. Weekly brown-bag lunches offer seminars on varying topics, from the different divisions of educational publishing to resume workshops. At the end of the program, intern may even be offered full-time positions.
Currently, we offer paid, unpaid, and credit internships in the editorial, project management, human resources, business development and marketing, publishing company start-up, and non-profit start-up departments.
